Snow bypasses Brainerd

Storm totals range from 11 inches to half-inch

Posted: January 29, 2013 - 10:47pm

Snow came with Monday night’s storm, but it didn’t fall to any significant depth in Brainerd.

The half-inch of snow in Brainerd fell on top of ice formed after rain. Sidewalks and roadways were slick Monday night with the Minnesota Department of Transportation listing travel as difficult here Monday night. As temperatures fall, icy conditions will be here to stay especially on side roads and untreated areas — at least for awhile.

Brainerd was on the edge of the snowfall forecast from an inch to about 5 inches. The band of heavier snow went north and west.

The Dixon Lake area, north of Highway 2 and north of Lake Winnibigoshish, received nearly a foot of snow. The National Weather Service in Duluth reported snow totals Tuesday morning.

In the lakes region, totals ranged from 10.5 inches northwest of Cass Lake to a half-inch in Brainerd and Crosslake.

The snow amounts varied from 5.8 inches one mile north of Hackensack to 4.3 inches in Hackensack.

The warmth following Monday’s snow/rain mix lingered Tuesday as temperatures were in the 30s well into the afternoon.

Wednesday is forecast to bring a brisk change, with a high of 9 degrees. There is a small chance for additional snow or flurries Wednesday and Thursday.

Instead of shovels, residents are likely to be breaking out the hat and mittens again as temperatures drop to 11 below Wednesday. The northwest wind of 10-15 mph may gust as high as 20 mph, creating wind chill values between 20 below and 30 below. The National Weather Service in Duluth noted advisories or warnings may be issued in the next few days, depending on conditions.

Thursday’s high may reach 1 below and drop down to 20 below overnight. Friday could have a high of 3 degrees and an overnight low of 10 below.

But temps should feel better by Saturday with a high of 19 expected. And by Sunday, the high may reach 27.
