We all remember the excitement of getting a gift. The package with its bright paper and ribbons created its own excitement, but ultimately, what was inside the package created the real value, or lack thereof. Sometimes what was in the package was not what the wrapping suggested.
Now it is election time and we see all the bright wrapping and ribbons of the candidates. Some wrap themselves in the flag, some in the Bible; others find other attractive wrappings.
Our job as responsible citizens is to get past the paper and ribbons and insist on seeing what is inside the box and what it will mean to us as citizens of this democracy and ordinary people, trying to survive economically.
Some hope we will not look inside until after the election, being fooled by their appeal to our personal desires about how everyone else should live their lives and believe.
But, if we have been alive during the last decade, we know that what is in the box matters a lot. We found, when we opened the box in 2000 and for the next eight years that we, the lower 90 percent of citizens, were much poorer and without many options.
That box had contained gifts for the wealthy and powerful. The rest of us got only lumps of coal.
Unfortunately, the Republican Party supported that box and, if you actually insist on the boxes being opened before you make your choices this election year, you will see that, for many of the candidates, their boxes contain more of the same.
It is very important to open the boxes now and see what is inside so you can vote for a viable future for ordinary Americans.
Dahl is the better administrator
Both candidates for Crow Wing County sheriff have been the sheriff. Both are respected, honorable and friendly. However, one has proven himself the better administrator. Especially with the budget cuts he has had to contend with. Re-elect Sheriff Dahl on November 2.
New leadership needed
I just read your fluff piece on Oberstar. If this 18-term Congressman is so great, why has only one person from his district donated to his campaign? Oberstar represents everything wrong with politics. Elect Chip Cravaack in November. We desperately need new leadership in Washington and Chip will provide it.
EDITOR'S NOTE: According to the Politico website Oberstar collected just one contribution from the 8th District in the reporting period between June 22 and Sept. 30.
Klang builds community
At the recent Minnesota Freedom Council forum, Eric Klang said: By running for sheriff, I'm not building my resume; I'm building a stronger community for today, tomorrow and the years to come. Eric's ability to unite people makes him the best candidate for our sheriff.
Klang's unique certification
Eric Klang's Homeland Security certification uniquely sets him apart from all other law enforcement officers in Crow Wing County. He's studied the trends; he's proactive, innovative and diligent in pursuit of continued excellence in service to our citizens. This quality leadership motivates a department and protects the citizens incredibly well.
Vote fraud problem is real
All Minnesotans, regardless of party, please vote Dan Doc Severson as secretary of state to fight the very real vote fraud problem so we can elect our candidates, instead of special interests who are using dead people, felons, illegals, and people who don't exist to decide who will represent us.
Countries are wising up
Thank goodness in this country we have gotten past slavery, stonings, hangings and subjugating women. So why would we want to welcome members of a religion that believe in this and worse today? If you think I am singling out a group, I am singling out the group that has beheaded, bombed and killed men, women and children in several countries including ours. Yet we have to be so politically correct to cater to everyone who comes here legally or illegally. From what I read, other countries are starting to wise up. But not ours.
And for the Brainerd writer who is interested in my racial, religious and ethnic heritage, my educated grandparents emigrated here from Sweden years ago. If this amuses you, so be it.
Vampires reported in Baxter
There are vampires in Baxter and the police will not do anything about it. Bring your wooden stakes if you visit haunted Wedgewood. This year's seasonal Halloween display is up at the intersection of Parkwood and Wedgewood Drive in Baxter. From the Baxter School, go .7 of a mile on 48 (Highland Scenic Road) to Parkwood Drive. Haunted Wedgewood will be on the right. Happy Halloween!
Ward is a man of integrity
I have had the privilege of seeing John Ward in action at the Capitol. He has the desire and ability to work with both parties to get legislation passed that benefits our area. He is committed to the people and communities he serves.
Ward really cares
I am writing this letter in support of John Ward. Earlier this year we had issues with the state of Minnesota.
John Ward helped solve the problem. He actually listened and did what he said he would do personally.
Vote for someone who really does care.
Vote John Ward.
Klang has a clear message
Eric Klang is very professional and persuasive when he presents himself as candidate for sheriff. He speaks honestly about his accomplishments, education, vision and passion for the sheriff's office. I never hear him speak poorly about his opponent. Thank you for your integrity! Vote Klang for Sheriff Nov. 2.
Ward's stellar qualities
Before he began his political career, John Ward was a very successful teacher and coach primarily because of his desire and determination to see that his students/athletes accomplished their goals. During the past four years as our state representative, John has exhibited those same stellar qualities. Re-elect John Ward.
Klang is dedicated
I have had the privilege of working with Eric Klang as a volunteer for the Let's Go Fishing With Seniors Brainerd Lakes area chapter. Eric has earned my respect as a dedicated, proactive leader. These are qualities that I want to see in the next sheriff of Crow Wing County.
Keep Franzen on the board
I would like to encourage votes for Rosemary Franzen. I have known her all of my life and am very proud of her dedication to representing the average person. She is a hard working, honest and sincere person. Let's keep her in office.
Let's fire Oberstar
When voting, remember what Congressman Oberstar has done to us. He has supported nearly every spending bill that has been put before him especially the energy tax. It is time his economic policies impact him personally. Let's put him on the unemployment line.
Howes - A proven leader
It's worth noting that State Rep. Larry Howes was one of only 18 representatives who were endorsed by Conservation Minnesota. His re-election will help protect our environment for future generations, but also the jobs and economic stability in the tourism and forest industries. Re-elect a proven leader - Larry Howes.
Shaw's pledge to the voters
Another election is around the corner with opportunity for reform. If elected, Ed Shaw has promised the citizens that he will not take a salary until our city's unemployment rate falls below ten percent. No other candidate has pledged this. Vote Shaw, Ward 2 to restore accountability in local government.
