BACKUS - A 54-year-old LaPorte man injured after his vehicle struck a tree Saturday off Highway 371 remained in critical condition Monday at North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale.
The crash happened about 5:15 p.m., about a mile south of Backus. Philip W. Kangas was driving southbound on Highway 371 when his vehicle went into the northbound lane, drove off the left side of the roadway, hit several signs and continued into the eastbound ditch for several hundred yards before striking a tree, the State Patrol reported.
Philip Kangas and his daughter, Michelle M. Kangas, 9, were both transported to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale. A hospital spokesman said Michelle Kangas was in good condition Monday.
