Art focus: Fifth Street Journal.
Adviser nomination: Darian has been a huge asset to the journalism program this year. She's a very good writer who'll take on difficult stories that demand multiple interviews and research. She also has an eye for design and has created some interesting pages. I'm fortunate she was able to sign up for spring semester as she will prove to be a strong leader with new students.
Talk about one of your difficult stories: My first story I did was on Obama's back-to-school address he gave to students about their education. I didn't watch it, but no one else wanted to do the story so I did it. I interviewed Mrs. (Kathy) Hegstrom and I pulled Obama's draft off the Internet and read it. It was hard to write. I wrote it and I wasn't sure if I was writing it right. It was my first story ever. I joined Fifth Street this year.
What do you enjoy about writing: It's a way to express yourself with different words. I like the freedom you have and I enjoy when others read what I wrote.
Artist most admired: Georgia O'Keeffe, a painter.
Favorite subject: American history.
Your New Year's resolution: To study more.
Favorite TV series: Gossip Girl.
Favorite author: Nicholas Sparks.
Favorite magazine: Glamour.
Something you'd like to do after high school: I want to join the Peace Corps after my generals at college are done. I wanted to do it after high school, but my mom thought I should wait just in case I change my mind.
I've been self-centered my whole life. I watch a lot of news and see that a lot of people need help and I want to help them.
Occasion that you lie: I don't lie often. My brother and I blame each other for things we do to each other so I'll lie to my mom and say I didn't do it.
Hobbies: Drawing, reading and playing soccer.
Parents: Michele and Terry DeCora of Brainerd.
Honorable mentions: Molly Peltoma, senior, Brainonian: The Brainonian adviser said, Molly is one of the most dependable senior yearbook staff members who never shies away from the tough assignments and can be counted on to produce attractive and accurate yearbook pages.
Jenna Riley, senior, debate: Riley qualified for the National Debate Tournament that will be held in Kansas City this summer. This will be her third opportunity to represent the Northern Lights Debate District in Lincoln Douglas Debate.
