Pioneers best Melrose, win Cathedral title

ST. CLOUD - Scott Herold's 23 points and Shane Weber's 18 points helped the second-ranked Class 2A Pierz Pioneers to a 58-53 win over Melrose in the championship game of the St. Cloud Cathedral tournament Friday.

Matt Poepping, Jeremy Munson, Mike Pohlkamp and Weber all collected seven rebounds apiece for Pierz. Weber and Herold were named to the all-tournament team as well.

Verndale 63, Rothsay 61

MOORHEAD - Verndale's Wayne Kopp tipped in a rebound with one second left on the clock to give the Pirates a 63-61 win over Rothsay at the Concordia College tournament Friday.

Kopp finished with a team-high 18 points while Jon Price registered a double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. Shane Finck added 13 points in the win.

LITTLE FALLS - Phil Hochsprung led the Little Falls Flyers with 16 points, but it was not enough as they fell to Long Prairie-Grey Eagle 61-54 in the Little Falls tournament championship game Friday.

Tom Dunlap scored 12 points and Eric Bell added nine points for the Flyers.

Todd Kuelbs poured in 28 points for Long Prairie-Grey Eagle.
