AITKIN - Laurence (Larry) A. Leonard, age 71, of Aitkin, died Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin.
Larry was born Feb. 15, 1934, at Hartley, Iowa, the son of Arthur and Stella (Wehmeyer) Leonard. He moved with his family to Verndale, Minn., in 1948 and graduated from the Verndale High School in 1952. He moved to Aitkin in 1954 and worked in the retail lumber industry for 35 years. He married Beverly Schwartz on Oct. 19, 1955, in Verndale. They have made their home in Aitkin since. Larry most recently worked in real estate and Aitkin Custom Homes. Over the years, he had been involved in the Boy Scouts, was a Little League coach, served as president of the Jack-A-Lopes, past president of the Aitkin Jaycees, was a member of the Knights of Columbus, served as a fireman with the Aitkin Fire Department and was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose.
He is survived by his wife, Beverly Leonard, of Aitkin; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dan Leonard, of Aitkin, Brian and Sonia Leonard, of Maple Grove, Minn., Gary and Rea Leonard, of Brooklyn Park, Dave and Leisa Leonard, of Brooklyn Park; nine grandchildren, Jill, Cole, Daniel, Peter, Matthew, Cara, Isaac, Adam, Nathan; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Leslie and Darlene Leonard, of Verndale, Darwin and Wilma Leonard, of Verndale, Don and Kathy Leonard, of Sauk Centre, Minn.; a sister and brother-in-law, LaVonne and Larry Bake, of Verndale. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Stella.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, Jan. 2, 2006, at 11 a.m. from St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin with Father Paul Fruth officiating. Burial will be in the St. Thomas Cemetery in Aitkin. Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church. Memorials are preferred to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are with the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin.
