LITTLE FALLS -- Betty M. Karnowski, 81, Little Falls, died Friday, Dec. 27, 2002, at St. Otto's Care Center.
She was born April 12, 1921, in Motley to Walter William and Alice Maude (Heath) Torgerson. She lived in Motley until the family moved to Brainerd in the early 1930s. She was a graduate of Washington High School in Brainerd and briefly attended Brainerd Junior College. She wrote a column for the Little Falls Daily Transcript in the mid-1970s. She married A.J. "Toby" Karnowski in January 1949 in Bowling Green, Ohio. They lived in Little Falls and Cushing. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary Post No. 1112 where she served as past president Sixth District, and president of VFW Auxiliary Department of Minnesota from 1975-1976. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary Post No. 46, Daughters of Isabella, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, Catholic Daughters of the Americas as acting president Military Order of Cooties Auxiliary, board of directors of Little Falls Senior Center and a member of St. Mary's Church since 1949.
Survivors include two sons, Les Chisholm, Lacy, Wash., and Brian Karnowski, Little Falls; a daughter, Ruth Karnowski Rigenhagen, Eagle Butte, S.D.; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Herb and George Torgerson; and three sisters, Dorthy Hauseman, Shirley Wolfe and Mary Zaffke.
Her husband; two sons, Russell E. "Blue" Chisholm, and Mark Allen Karnowski; and a daughter, Anita Marie Chisholm, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Little Falls with Father Nick Landsberger officiating. Burial will be in Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery in Camp Ripley.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. today at Brenny-Simonet Funeral Home, East Chapel, in Little Falls with a VFW Auxiliary service at 5 p.m., parish prayers at 5:30 p.m., and Daughters of Isabella at 6 p.m., and from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services Tuesday at the funeral home.
