The Year 2000 Toys for Kids program of the Heartland Detachment, Marine Corps League is now history. By all accounts it was successful, in that 386 families were provided with toys for 866 children in the area we service, including Baxter, Brainerd, Crosby, Ironton, Deerwood, Fort Ripley and Merrifield.
There are similar programs, provided by other agencies in the areas surrounding ours.
Our thanks go out to the individuals, service organizations and businesses that provided us with toys and/or ash donations with which to work and accomplish this activity. In addition, there were a number of volunteers from outside the Detachment and Auxiliary who worked long hours to prepare the bags of toys for those children.
Without their help, we would have been unable to accomplish this task. A cell phone was provided for our use by Cellular One of Central Minnesota, without charge.
The facilities of the Brainerd National Guard Armory were utilized to prepare the toy bags and provide a convenient location for the families to pick them up. In addition, we thank the law enforcement agencies from Brainerd, Crow Wing County, Crosby-Ironton and Deerwood which were of great help in delivering the bags to some families who were unable to make the pickup at the armory.
In addition, we thank the Salvation Army, Crow Wing Social Services, Tri-County Community Action Program and the Crosby Elementary School Counselor's Office for aid in securing the families' applications for the toys.
Already the Heartland Detachment is planning for the 2001 Toys for Kids Program.
