GILBERT (AP) -- The former police chief of Gilbert in northeastern Minnesota was sentenced Friday to pay a $500 fine and serve two years probation for a misdemeanor of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Allan Olsen pleaded innocent after being charged with driving under the influence following an accident last May that seriously injured his legs. He was convicted by a jury two weeks ago.
Olsen addressed the court after the sentencing Friday. "In our occupation, we deal with a great many people that seem to blame their problems on other people," he said. "I assure you I have no axes to grind."
He sent his resignation this week to the Gilbert City Council. He said his injuries prevented him from performing his duties as chief.
Olsen also must undergo an alcohol problem assessment.
