The Brainerd Warriors and Apple Valley were tied 1-1 after overtime but the Eagles scored one more time in a shootout to escape with a 2-1 victory Tuesday in the Silver Division of the Schwan Cup boys' hockey tournament at Roseville Skating Center.
In the five-player shootout, both teams missed their first attempt. Apple Valley then scored and Brainerd's Zack Lundbohm tied it.
Apple Valley's third player scored and so did the Warriors' Mike Baker.
The Eagles' fourth player missed along with Brainerd's Ryan Peltoma.
Apple Valley's fifth player scored as well as the Warriors' Pete Larson to maintain the stalemate.
The contest then went into a sudden-death shootout.
The Eagles missed their sixth attempt and so did Brainerd's Mike Germain.
Apple Valley's seventh player scored and the Warriors' Conrad Kragness missed, ending the contest.
"Any time you come to a tournament you like to advance to the winners' side," Warriors coach Ty Eigner said. "The neat thing is if you get to the championship game (in this tournament) it's at the Xcel Energy Center. We don't get that opportunity so we'll have to work at the end of the year to get ourselves to the Xcel."
Brainerd led 1-0 after two periods as Lundbohm tallied off assists from Kragness and Carl Sneep.
"It was on a rush by Sneep," Eigner said. "Carl took a shot, Conrad batted at the rebound and Zack scored on the next one. We felt like going into the third we were where we wanted to be.
"It's not like we didn't show up and play hard. It was a good, solid hockey game. We came out and played well. We are disappointed we don't advance but we're not disappointed. The kids played a solid hockey team to a 1-1 tie."
Apple Valley is a member of the Lake Conference, playing Eden Prairie, Bloomington Jefferson, Burnsville, Eagan, Rosemount, Chaska and Eastview twice apiece. The Eagles also played Grand Rapids and Duluth East last weekend.
"They play a very tough schedule," Eigner said. "Year in and year out they're used to playing at a high level."
For both teams' regular-season record the game will be considered a tie since the teams were deadlocked after the 5-minute overtime. The shootout was only to decide which team advances in the tournament.
