An Ironton man, now suspected of robbing a Pine River bank, was indicted Tuesday in U.S. District Court on a charge of felon in possession of a firearm relating to his suspected involvement in a Mission Mini Storage burglary Sept. 14 in Crosslake.
As part of the Crow Wing County burglary investigation, a Winchester 12-gauge shotgun was found in the home of Jeffrey David Ross, 41. As a convicted felon with at least three separate crimes of violence, Ross cannot legally possess a firearm, which is the basis of the federal indictment.
Ross is being held on the federal charge.
Ross also is suspected of robbing the U.S. Bank in Pine River at gunpoint Dec. 22 and then leading officers on a 45-minute pursuit before being apprehended.
No charges to date have been filed against Ross for the Cass County armed robbery.
Karen Bailey, media coordinator for the U.S. attorney's office, said she cannot comment on future charges, if any, against Ross. Bailey said the minimum sentence on this federal charge, if Ross would be convicted, is 15 years in prison.
Cass County Attorney Earl Maus said no local charges have been filed at this time against Ross on the armed robbery. Maus said he will review the federal charges and then determine if charges will be brought.
Ross was arraigned Sept. 16 in Crow Wing District Court for the break-in of the storage units. Charges included one count of ineligible person in possession of a firearm, one count of illegal possession of a firearm, three counts of third-degree burglary, one count of possession of burglary or theft tools and one count of driving after suspension.
Ross was released from jail on Sept. 17 after making bond. His next court appearance on the Crow Wing County charges is set for Feb. 22.
Ross has five previous convictions in Minnesota, including felony convictions for a sexual offense, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, aggravated robbery and theft/attempted escape from custody. Three times he was sentenced to prison terms.
