BAXTER -- A 36-year-old Pine River woman was arrested for writing about $10,000 in forged checks, said Dale Walz, Baxter police captain.
Walz said the woman wrote several checks drawn on three different accounts that were closed. The woman wrote the checks at businesses in Baxter and in Crow Wing, Cass, Hubbard and Beltrami counties.
The woman has not been charged and is currently being held in the Crow Wing County jail.
Other agencies assisting Baxter police in the investigation include Cass County Sheriff's Department, Grand Rapids Police Department and the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department.
A male accomplice also may face charges.
"The two would purchase merchandise from a store using a check to pay for the goods and later return the merchandise for cash," officials said.
