ST. PAUL - Ryan Peltoma's goal in a sudden-death shootout propelled the Brainerd Warriors past Class 2A's seventh-ranked Elk River Elks 3-2 in the Silver Division of the Schwan Cup boys' hockey tournament Tuesday at Aldrich Arena.
Following a scoreless overtime the contest was tied 2-2. After the first five shooters in the shootout it was still tied as Elk River's Andrew Malzahn and Brainerd's Pete Larson scored.
The game then went to a sudden-death shootout with the first team scoring declared the winner.
Peltoma, the Warriors' ninth shooter in the shootout, tallied on a high wrist shot into the top corner.
"Ryan made a great shot," Warriors coach Ty Eigner said. "Like (assistant coach) Toby Kvalevog said, 'That's a goal in any league.' It went in under the crossbar. Nobody was going to stop that shot."
Warriors goalie Nick Whichello stopped 8 of 9 Elk River shots in the shootout and made 17 saves in regulation and overtime.
"In our last three practices we worked hard on a shootout because we were in a shootout two times last year," Eigner said. "If we were going to be in a shootout we wanted to have a plan.
"In practice we were not only working on our shooters. We worked on our goalies too. Nick was outstanding in the shootout."
Brainerd plays Apple Valley, a 7-3 winner over Breck, in the semifinals 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Aldrich Arena.
