The Brainerd Lakes Area Salvation Army reported Wednesday that the organization was at $91,591 toward the Christmas kettle fund-raising goal of $103,000. This is almost 89 percent of their total kettle goal for this Christmas Season

LAKE SHORE - Byron W. "Barney" Briggs, age 83, of Lake Shore, Minn., died at his home Wednesday, Dec. 23, 2009. Barney was born March 28, 1926, in Minneapolis to Henry and Florence (Jepson) Briggs. He had been a 40-year resident of the Brainerd lakes area. He married Janice Rheaume Feb. 25, 1995.

Obama proves to be mortal
WASHINGTON - Perhaps it is the spirit of the season, but my empathy receptors are in overdrive for poor Barack Obama. All he wanted for Christmas was a health care reform bill -- and all he got was a lousy insurance industry bailout that few can love.
I almost feel sorry for my old political party of the Can't Do Republicans. They really are in a tough place. If they give up their goal of crippling Obama by preventing health care reform it will save American lives but it will reduce the record profits of the health insurance industry.
