20 years ago (1983)

Sub-zero Christmas Eve Temperatures and a broken water sprinkler pipe combined to wreak havoc with the Pine River High School gymnasium floor and about half of the school's floor space this past weekend.

30 years ago (1973)

A check with some of the fuel oil suppliers here has revealed that Brainerd area residents have "dialed down," in an effort to save fuel during the current energy crisis.

40 years ago (1963)

The old year will bow out and the new year makes its appearance here Tuesday night and Wednesday morning. Many service and fraternal organizations have planned gala and colorful parties. Special events are also planned at local night clubs.

60 years old (1943)

Brainerd prepared today to welcome in the New Year with general celebrations including a dance at the armory and one at the Elks Club.

80 years ago (1923)

Effie, "Why hasn't daddy much hair?"

Mother, "Because he thinks a lot darling."

Effie, "But why have you got such a lot, mummie?"

Mother, "Get on with your breakfast."

100 years ago (1903)

Tipping, "I'm afraid the Balkers won't get along very well together."

Flytcher, "I don't se why not. They are wholly in harmony, you know. She thinks there is nobody in the world who can come up to her husband and he is certain of it."
