PINE RIVER -- On Feb. 27, Rachel Anthony, a 50-year-old Pequot Lakes resident, was abducted from the Pine River liquor store where she worked.
After law enforcement and family members searched woods and rivers for six weeks, horseback riders found her body in northwest Breezy Point.
The cause of death was determined to be asphyxia due to homicidal violence, an autopsy revealed, turning a missing person case into a murder investigation.
Ten months after Anthony's abduction, law enforcement officials in both Cass and Crow Wing counties continue to search for Anthony's killer.
Tips on the case have all but stopped coming in, but Cass County Sheriff Randy Fisher said investigators are still busy with the case, using their time now to revisit information first received after Anthony's disappearance.
"We're absolutely going back," said Fisher. "We're looking over everything."
Anthony lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Rodney Winch, and their two children in rural Pequot Lakes.
She was working alone at Ultimate Liquors the night she was abducted.
About 1 a.m. a Pine River police officer noticed Anthony's car still idling in front of Ultimate Liquors. The front door of the store was locked. In the store, law enforcement officials found Anthony's purse and her coat, unusual since temperatures had reached below freezing that night. The lights and the radio in the store were on. There were no signs of struggle, no money or merchandise taken.
Ground and air searches were conducted. The Cass County sheriff's and Pine River police departments offered a $10,000 reward for information.
Investigators had said they were seeking information about a customer thought to have visited the store about 10 p.m., just before it closed. Though the store was equipped with surveillance cameras, they were not recording that night.
On April 13, four teen-agers on horseback came across Anthony's body about 15 feet off Nelson Road in Breezy Point. Though evidence was gathered at the scene, no suspects were identified.
