PINE RIVER - Cass County authorities received a report at 10:55 p.m. Tuesday of a motorist passed out in a parked vehicle in the southbound lane of Highway 84 in Pine River.
Tom Burch, Cass County sheriff's chief deputy, said a deputy located the vehicle and attempted to wake the driver, who was sleeping in the running vehicle in the roadway. Burch said the deputy broke one of the vehicle's windows to attempt to get to the driver, both as a safety concern for the driver and to get the running vehicle out of the roadway. The driver then woke up and sped off onto nearby Norway Lake, exiting the lake from another lake access not far from Pine River-Backus High School. Law enforcement did not attempt to follow the driver across the lake but continued to try to find the suspect, who was not apprehended.
Burch said alcohol is believed to play a factor in the incident since there was evidence in the vehicle to indicate the driver had been drinking.
Burch said authorities know who the vehicle's registered owner is and this person recently sold it to a suspect whom Cass County authorities are looking for.
"We believe we do know who the current owner is," said Burch. "It's just a matter of finding him now."
