As the soldiers in Company A, 1st Battalion, 194th Armor, were packing and cleaning before leaving Fort Dix, N.J., for duty in Iraq, they were using every possible space for care packages.
In an e-mail update, Capt. Mike Pazdernik said the support has been "absolutely amazing."
There were more than 1,000 minutes of phone cards for each soldier.
"We have more goodies than we can possibly eat," Pazdernik wrote. "Of course, that doesn't keep us from trying. Seeing the stacks of cookies and other treats convinces me that our loved ones want us to come home 10 or 20 pounds heavier than when we left.
"We have also received tons of letters from children. They are so innocent and special. Yet another great reminder of why we do what we do."
Soldiers are on an 18-month deployment with 12 months of "boots on the ground" duty near Baghdad. They left Fort Dix earlier this week as they headed to Kuwait and then Iraq.
