It's supposed to be the season to be jolly. That means it's also the season for high school holiday tournaments.
This week, Brainerd Warriors boys' hockey and swimming and diving teams will host holiday events. Meanwhile, the boys' and girls' basketball teams and girls' hockey team will hit the road for holiday tournaments.
Following is a capsule of each tournament:
Boys' hockey -- The Warriors will host a three-team round-robin event They play Chaska 7:30 p.m. Dec. 27 at Brainerd Area Civic Center, Park Center will play Chaska 7:30 p.m. Dec. 28 and Brainerd will play Park Center 7:30 p.m. Dec. 29.
Chaska is coached by Dave Snuggerud, a former University of Minnesota and Olympic standout who played in the NHL for the Buffalo Sabres, San Jose Sharks and Philadelphia Flyers.
It will be the first time the Warrior boys have played at home during the holidays since the 1987-88 season.
"We would like to get four teams," Warriors coach Ty Eigner said. "We hope it gets bigger, with four or six teams. It was supposed to be a tournament. It's really just bringing in two teams and playing some games."
Swimming and diving -- Fergus Falls, Monticello, Melrose/Sauk Centre, Rosemount, Moorhead and Bemidji will join Brainerd 1 p.m. Dec. 27 for an invitational.
Rosemount finished fourth in the 1A state meet last year and Moorhead was sixth in 2A.
"It's the strongest field we've ever had," Warriors coach John Zemke said. "Rosemount is always a powerhouse. Moorhead is expected to be one of the teams that could win it."
Top individuals include Moorhead's Jeff Schneider, state runner-up in the 200- and 500-yard freestyles; Paul Evenson, eighth in the state 200 free and 10th in the 100 butterfly; and Jared Peters, 10th in the state 100 backstroke and 15th in the butterfly. The Spuds' 200 medley relay and 400 free relay were fourth at state.
Brainerd leaders include sprinter Ty Goeman and diver Shaun Kennedy. Ty Goeman was fifth in the 50 free and 13th in the 100 free at state. Kennedy was fourth at state last year and fifth the year before.
Girls' hockey -- Brainerd opens against Fort Francis, Ont., 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Yellow Division of the Minnesota Girls Holiday Cup in Blaine. The eight-team event runs through Friday.
Boys' basketball -- The Warriors compete in the Washington County Bank tournament and open 2:45 p.m. Thursday against Monticello. The eight-team event runs through Saturday.
Girls' basketball -- Brainerd competes in the eight-team, three-day Elk River tournament. The Warriors open against Elk River 7:45 p.m. Thursday.
