ST. CLOUD - The Brainerd Warriors girls displayed their depth as the combination of varsity, junior varsity and junior high skiers led the Warriors to first Tuesday in the St. Cloud Tech Invite.
The Brainerd boys' placed fourth in the unique 1-kilometer sprint elimination format. Ten skiers raced against each other with the top five advancing to the second round. There 10 more competed until reaching the third and final round. Those final 10 earned team points depending on how they finished. All three levels - varsity, junior varsity and junior high - combined for the final team score.
For the varsity girls Amanda Finstad advanced to the final round where she placed fifth with a 3:25. Arianna Brown advanced to the second round and Rachael Howard and Jennifer Murray skied, but did not advance past the first round.
Sarah Fairbanks won the junior varsity event with a 3:19. Also making the final round were Allison Kosobud, who placed second in 3:23 and Emily Dumbeck, who finished sixth in 3:38. Rachel Bartosh advanced to the second round and Kelsey Thompson and Michaela Quast competed.
Brainerd's Katie Montgomery won the junior high race with a 3:50. Sara Whiteman (5th in 4:01) and Serena Schreifels (7th in 4:14) advanced to the finals.
On the boys' side Ross Duval advanced to the second round and Cole Sundquist and Michael Montgomery competed.
Riley Nelson paced Brainerd's junior varsity team with a second-place time of 2:43. Timothy Nelson finished 10th with a 3:17.
Seventh grader Noah Baker finished third in the junior high meet with a 3:24.
"It was an exciting meet and the kids were pretty nervous," said Warrior head coach Nicole Kellerman. "We were missing a third of our team today because of Christmas finals and tests so to finish as well as we did while missing that many kids was a big accomplishment."
The Warriors travel to Deer River Tuesday and then host their own invitational 10 a.m. Dec. 31 at the Northland Arboretum. That event will be a continuous pursuit where athletes will complete a four or five kilometer classic event, race back to the staging area, switch equipment and complete a four or five kilometer skate race.
