Brainerd police got a new job recently - as part-time taxi drivers. But for emergencies only. The city announced the Brainerd Police Department will play taxi until an alternative to Brainerd Taxi, which went out of business, is replaced.

(Photo) Three members of the board of directors of Crow Wing Coop Power and Light were awarded plaques for 25 or more years of service at the Christmas party at Club LaGuyal. They were, Marvin Peterson, F. Preston Caughey and Henry Mattson.

2nd Lieutenant Leslie Brown, 21, of Brainerd, was killed in a jet aircraft accident in Okinawa according to word received by his family today. Brown had graduated from flight training in October and volunteered to be a jet pilot in November.
80 years ago (1929)
H.R. and I.A. Congdon of Oak Lawn Township, renowned wolf hunters in the county, tracked and killed the biggest brush wolf taken in these parts, a six-foot, 80-pound animal. The brothers say they tracked him 50 miles before getting a shot.
100 years ago (1909)
H.U. Hetting departed this morning for St. Croix Falls and other points in Wisconsin for the holidays. He took along some curiosities in the shape of sections of small trees showing the work of beavers in the northern swamps.
