SPEARFISH, S.D. -- Floyd W. Emerson, 91, Spearfish, S.D., died Friday, Dec. 20, 2002, at Lookout Memorial Hospital in Spearfish, S.D.
He was born Feb. 5, 1911, in Perkins County, S.D., to Leicester and Flavella (Wolfe) Emerson. He moved with his parents to Spearfish, S.D., in 1915 and graduated from Spearfish High School in 1928. He attended Black Hills Teacher's College in Spearfish, S.D., the University of South Dakota in Vermillion, S.D., and the University of Alabama. He married Francis Rohde on May 25, 1939. They lived in various cities around the country where he had news jobs before settling in Brainerd, where he was editor of The Brainerd Daily Dispatch for 22 years. Most recently he was writing articles for the Black Hills Pioneer. After his retirement in 1974 he and his wife lived in Florida, North Carolina and South Carolina before returning to Spearfish in 1984. He was a member of the Episcopal Church, served on vestries and was a choir member in many parishes, including the Church of All Angels in Spearfish and St. Paul's Church in Brainerd, where he sang in the choir. He was a member of Delta Tau Delta.
Survivors include a son, John Emerson, San Jose, Costa Rica; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
His wife died earlier.
Memorial services will be 3 p.m. Friday at Church of All Angels in Spearfish, S.D., with Father Bunker Hill officiating. Burial will be in Rosehill Cemetery in Spearfish, S.D.
