David Lust, Brainerd, and Susan Walberg, Ironton, graduated from Southwest State University this fall. Lust earned a degree in management and Walberg earned a degree in accounting.
Jeffrey Carlson of Little Falls received a scholarship through the Cargill Corporation of Minneapolis. The scholarship was awarded from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Kaylo Brooks, Brainerd, was awarded a $1,500 non-traditional scholarship from the St. Cloud Area Forum of Executive Women. Brooks is pursuing a major in social work and a minor in human relations at St. Cloud State University. Brooks also attended Central Lakes College in Brainerd, where she received the Outstanding Student of the Year award and a Citizenship award.
Samantha Sullivan, the daughter of Ted and Becky Sullivan of Pillager, has been selected as student of the month for December by the Youth Activities Committee of Brainerd Elks Lodge No. 615. Sullivan is a senior at Pillager High School and in involved in volleyball, basketball, softball, choir, school plays, National Honor Society and was on the homecoming, prom and class trip committees. She plans to attend the University of Minnesota for dental hygiene.
The recipients of a $500 Deerwood Lakes Lions Scholarship for non-traditional students for the spring semester are: Kathleen Grapp and Sheila Wing, will attend Central Lakes College to pursue degrees in nursing; and Cynthia Seidl, will continue to attend St. Joseph's College of Maine for health care administration.
Andy Akerson, a junior at Pequot Lakes High School, won the annual KLKS FM Christmas card contest. Akerson will be awarded a scholarship from the radio station for his efforts.
Sarah Kalinoski, the daughter of Stan and Mary Kalinoski of Baxter, was selected to be a layout committee co-chair for the 77th Little International sponsored by the Saddle and Sirloin Club of North Dakota State University. Kalinoski is a junior majoring in mass communications.
Heidi Magilke, the daughter to Craig and Susan Bartels of Staples, and Amber Vandenberghe, the daughter of Allan and Sheryl Vandenberghe of Brainerd, are participating in a study abroad program at Jena, Germany. Magilke is a junior and Vandenberghe is a senior at Concordia College in Moorhead.
The area following students, who attend Gustavus Adolphus College, studied abroad for the fall semester: Melissa Radniecki, Lake Shore, went to Alcala, Spain; Joshua Steffenson, Little Falls, Wollongong, Australia; and Erin Schumacher, Wadena, Glasgow, Scotland.
The following students at Garfield Elementary School were named students of the month for November: Anthony Smalling, Cole Spieker, Michael Boeder, Nicole Rasinski, Cole Smith, Kayla Logelin, Emily Erickson, Cameron Beckman, Jared Lenk, Allisa Spieker, Gaven Motschenbacher, Emilee Branum, Shelby Fitch, Trey Jambor, Katie Southard, Cami Ebinger and Brian Sibbert.
Students at Montessori School of Brainerd recently put on a Christmas program for parents. The school has classes from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. and also offers a full day program. The school is open from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
The following students from Emily Charter School were named to the honor roll for the first trimester: Named to the "A" honor roll were fourth-graders Naomi Berndt, Ashley Dunbar and Regina Nevin; fifth-graders Joseph Miller and John Terpstra; and sixth-graders Ethan Oftedahl and Melissa Peterson; Named to the "B" honor roll were fourth-graders Samantha Allen, Ashley Martin, Tylene Martineau, Chase Meulners and Paige Radke; fifth-graders Melinda Russell and Melissa Satchell; and sixth-graders Trisha Dehn, Tara McNaughton and Kyle Raph.
The Mille Lacs Lake Lions Club announced the winners of three $1,000 non-traditional scholarships: Diane Schilling, rural Brainerd, is pursuing a career as an ultrasound technician; Andrea Barneveld, Aitkin, a registered nurse; and Patrick Zerwas, Brainerd, applied psychology/chemical dependency counseling.
Rene Fredstrom, the daughter of Steven and Ardelle Wentworth of Brainerd, was awarded a Ray Duggan Scholarship from the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences for the 2002-03 school year.
Jodi Klett, Nisswa, earned a bachelor's of arts degree from Northern State University.
Jordan Nocton of Merrifield was selected as November girl student of the month at Family of Christ Lutheran School in Baxter. Nocton's fourth-grade teacher said Nocton has worked very hard and is a straight A student. "Jordan is an excellent Christian role model for her classmates and to those around her," said her teacher.
Justin Hiltner of Brainerd was selected as November boy student of the month at Family of Christ Lutheran School in Baxter. Hiltner's fifth-grade teacher is delighted in the growth and maturity he has demonstrated this year in his attitude and school work. "Justin has become developed confidence both in himself and in his work ethic," his teacher said.
