Alan E. Powers

Alan E. Powers died at his home on Saturday, Dec. 19, 2009.

He was born in Ottumwa, Iowa, on June 5, 1946, to Darrell and Sandy (McCall) Powers, moving to Baxter in 1957.

Al graduated from Washington High School in Brainerd in 1964 and Brainerd Community College in 1973. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

Alan was employed by the Minnesota DNR and fought many local and western U.S. fires.

He retired in 2006. Al was an avid reader, collector and friend to animals.

He married Randy R. Walsh in 1971 and later divorced. He married Lory Tougas in 1984 and also later divorced.

Al is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Jeff) Strobel; brothers, Randy (Bonnie) Powers and Michael (Ann) Powers; grandchildren, Jessica (Zeb) Schwendeman and Austin "Brody" Strobel; great-granddaughter, Tiara Schwendeman; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew, Fred Powers.

A visitation will be held from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 23, with a sharing time at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Nelson-Doran Funeral Home in Brainerd.

Military honors will be provided by the VFW Post No. 1647 Color Guard.

Memorials are preferred in lieu of flowers.
