A half a foot of snow fell Saturday in parts of the Brainerd area.

The National Weather Service in Duluth reported 6 inches of snow in Little Falls and just southwest of Brainerd, 5.3 inches in Long Prairie and Leader, 4 inches in Breezy Point and Pine Center, 3.8 inches in Pillager and 3.5 inches in Nisswa.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation advised motorists to drive carefully on roadways in Aitkin, Cass, Crow Wing, Mille Lacs, Todd and Wadena counties until about 10 a.m. Monday as icy patches, gusty winds, blowing snow and low wind chills would be prevalent in central Minnesota.

While a winter weather advisory for Sunday was canceled, a wind chill advisory is in effect until noon Monday in Aitkin, Cass and Crow Wing counties as temperatures 18 to 23 degrees below zero and wind chills of 25 to 35 degrees below zero were expected Monday morning.

The weather service reported a wind chill advisory means a combination of bitterly cold arctic air and brisk winds will create dangerously cold wind chill values, with exposed flesh freezing in 15 to 25 minutes resulting in frostbite and hypothermia.

Temperatures will be 13 to 18 degrees on Tuesday with light snow likely, 4 to 9 degrees on Wednesday, 14 to 19 degrees on Christmas Day and 18 to 23 degrees on Friday.
