20 years ago (1987)

From shrubs along the sidewalk to the top of trees, lights are everywhere in the yard of Richard Shatka, whose home won first place in the fantasy division of the Brainerd Christmas Lighting Contest.

30 years ago (1977)

Some 260 baskets, containing everything from canned food to a frozen turkey, were either picked up at the Salvation Army store or else delivered to homes and apartments.

40 years ago (1967)

Owners of homestead property in Brainerd will receive a reduction of about 25 percent in their tax bills next year, despite a $28.56 mill levy increase.

60 years ago (1947)

Brainerd goes into this 1947 Christmas Day as one of the most fortunate cities in the world. During the entire year this city has experienced no municipal setbacks. It has been free of destruction from the elements. It has suffered no labor troubles and its people enjoyed good employment and a healthy existence.

80 years ago (1927)

The Water and Light Board is to be commended for the public spirit shown in its holiday illumination of Brainerd business streets. Red, blue, and green festoons of lights have been strung on Laurel and Front Streets. The welcome sign is a mass of light and color.

100 years ago (1907)

Brass Band at the Casino Roller Rink tonight. Come and bring a lady. Admission and skates, 25.
