AITKIN - A 57-year-old Palisade woman died in a two-vehicle, head-on collision about 5:35 p.m. Tuesday on Highway 169, 12 miles north of Aitkin, the State Patrol reported.
Janell L. Hatfield was driving northbound on Highway 169 when she swerved into the southbound lane to avoid a deer, the State Patrol reported.
The deer hit the driver's side of the vehicle and Hatfield attempted to go back into the northbound lane but went too far, overcorrected and ended up in the southbound lane striking head-on a vehicle driven by Elijah Wencl, 28, McGregor.
Hatfield was pronounced dead at the scene.
Elijah Wencl suffered a broken sternum, bumps and bruises and was treated at the Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin and released.
A passenger in the Wencl vehicle, Barry Wencl, 51, McGregor, suffered a broken sternum, broken ribs, bumps and bruises and was treated at the Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin and released.
