Brainerd Taxi Cab, the only taxi service in Brainerd, has gone out of business, leaving Dial-a-Ride as the only means for people without cars to get around. The taxi owner said costs had risen too high for residents to afford the higher rates.

The two fishermen thought the ice on Platte Lake might not be safe so they rolled their windows down before driving out from shore. They were right. A few minutes later their car was under 15 feet of water and the men pondered an expensive lesson.

Gov. Levander's fishing party for the opening of the 1970 fishing season will be held at Breezy Point, officials said. About 120 members of the media are expected to attend. A committee will be formed from area chambers and tourism groups to plan the event.

Three teen-aged St. Paul boys were sentenced today after they had threatened two Brainerd girls with a rifle and a hatchet when the girls refused to go for a ride with them. They accosted the girls at the Sixth and Oak Street bus stop, then followed the bus.
80 years ago (1929)
The Brainerd High School basketball team, which has not been on a gym floor this season as the new Washington school is not yet open, surprised even themselves by beating Pine River on the latter's floor by a score of 32-14.
100 years ago (1909)
Bredenberg and Erickson, the popular and well known grocers of Southeast Brainerd, are just getting settled in their new building, having moved in Friday last. The brick building is 25 feet by 75 feet, two stories high with a basement at 13th and Oak Streets.
