The Brainerd Warriors junior varsity bowling team captured the state championship Dec. 11 at Huikko's Bowling Center in Buffalo.
After 10 games of qualifying, Brainerd was seeded No. 3 with a 160 average. Six teams remained after qualifying to bowl in head-to-head match play.
Brainerd defeated No. 6 St. Cloud Tech 181-146, 164-116, 153-176, 194-170. The Warriors then defeated No. 2 Maple Grove 266-148, 169-154, 164-185, 149-168, 223-176.
In the championship match Brainerd defeated No. 1 Sauk Rapids 183-155, 192-132, 194-162.
Brainerd averaged 174.5 for 22 games and had the highest single game of the tournament (266).
Spencer Sundberg, Zach Hobson, Derrick Maske, Nick Schueller, Brent Olson, Brandon Zinda, Dustin Clarke, Allyson Olshanski and Erik Hukreide led the Warriors.
Hobson and Sundberg were named to the all-state tournament team with 80 and 92.3 percent fills. Sundberg was named the tournament's most valuable player.
