Friendship would be a great present

Child in need

Posted: Saturday, December 18, 2004

The year is coming to an end. There have been many happy Kinship matches during the past year. But some of our children have been disappointed and still remain on the waiting lists.

Here are snapshots of waiting children from the Pequot Lakes and Pine River-Backus communities who would consider a Kinship partner one of the best gifts ever this holiday season.

Do you remember little Joe? He is now in second grade at Pine River Elementary and seems to have grown a foot since first featured. Overall, school is going well, but he still prefers fishing and outdoor activities to being cooped up. His two older brothers now have partners and he wants one too.

Pequot Lakes seventh-grader Eva still needs someone to connect with. She has a variety of interests -- art, writing, sports and camping. Her school counselor says she still has mental health issues, but she really needs someone who makes her feel special and important.

There's Lara, an active 10-year-old at Pequot Lakes Eagle View Elementary. Her wish is for a partner like her stepsisters have. Lara prefers a more mature partner to help her learn to sew and listen to her practice piano. If the partner would have a pet, then the match would be perfect.

Also featured in Lara's article was Becca. She has since relocated to the Pine River area and is hoping a fresh start in a new school will turn things around. She is 11 and has also experienced some mental health issues, but wants an active partner who is willing to exercise, ride horses and go to the movies.

Finally, we introduced you to Ann. She also relocated to a new school, Pequot Lakes Middle School, and is trying to learn new rules and make good friends. She needs someone to help her develop a good attitude.

These kids, and many others from the Brainerd and Crosby areas, all share the need to matter to another adult. Overworked or absent parents, new homes and schools, emotional or chemical issues increase the need for adult companionship. Follow through with the New Year's resolution to make a difference for a child in need.
