Last season it took the Central Lakes College women's basketball team 14 games before it registered its first win of the season and finished with just three wins on the year.
After just eight games this season the Raiders matched last year's win total and surpassed that mark Friday as CLC thwarted the Minot, N.D., Air Force Base Lady Magic 52-19.
"I'm pleased with how we are record wise," Raiders coach Brad Amundson said. "More importantly we're doing things on the court that we've been working on in practice and as long as we keep doing that the wins will take care of themselves. It's nice to see the girls doing the things we're teaching them."
After a conservative first five minutes, the Raiders opened a 14-2 lead. A fastbreak basket and a drive by Kim Rosecrans highlighted the run. That lead grew to 21-6 and CLC went into halftime with a 29-8 advantage.
There was one scary moment for the Raiders in the first half as Courtney Stach injured her knee on a drive. But upon further examination by the CLC athletic trainer the injury was not cause for concern.
With its second leading scorer on the bench CLC turned to the Karlsgodt sisters, Erin and LeaAnn. Erin Karlsgodt led all scorers with 16 points in the half and finished with a game-high 26. LeaAnn Karlsgodt jump started the offense as she supplied pass after pass, finishing with four assists in the half and nine in the game.
"We passed extremely well as a team," Amundson said. "LeaAnn did a very nice job of passing and she did it from the catch position. She got set and got a good look at the players and delivered some very good passes."
Rosecrans and Stach, the third and fourth ranked scorers in the North Division, sat the entire second half as Amundson mixed and matched lineups. The results was more of the same for CLC as it scored 14 straight points to start the second half.
"One nice thing is that we were able to put people in different roles," said Amundson. "As a coach you get to find out different things about your players and we saw things from the girls that we really liked."
One thing Amundson liked was the scoring from Erin Karlsgodt, as the Raiders continue to look for points and rebounding from the post. Erin Karlsgodt completed the double-double grabbing a game-high 12 rebounds with Andrea Almsted securing 11 and Kayla Gustafson nine.
"Erin was able to get open in the lane and get some good shots off," Amundson said. "She showed she can score and be a threat in the post. Hopefully she can continue that when she gets into the games down the road."
