"Granny," as she was known by all who knew her, passed away peacefully on Dec. 3, 2005, at the age of 93. She was born in El Dorado, Kan., on Jan. 3, 1912, to Elmer and Anna (Frisby) Ruth. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, John L. Smiley; her brother, Robert James Ruth; her sisters, Helen (Dutch) Moss and Katherine (Harry) Day. Her survivors include her two sons and their wives, R. J. Smiley and Beverlee Smiley, of Edina, Minn., and Dr. J. Douglas Smiley and Carol Smiley, of Siloam Springs, Ark.; and three grandchildren, Dr. J. Travis Smiley, and his wife, Vickie, of Fayetteville, Ark., Dr. Shelby Hoytal, and her husband, Joey, of Topeka, Kan., and Dr. J.T. Smiley and his wife, Dr. Christine Smiley, of Indian Hills, Colo.; four great-grandchildren, Joseph John Fenoglio, James Douglas Fenoglio and Jack Haden Hoytal, of Topeka, Kan., and Summer Hope Smiley, of Fayetteville, Ark.; two sisters, Jane McHugh and Wilda Courser, of Flower Mound, Texas.
Marianna graduated from El Dorado High School and Butler County Community College in El Dorado, Kan., and Fort Hays Kansas State University in Hays, Kan. She taught elementary school for many years in the Hays Public School system. She was a firm believer in education and furnished room and board through college for several family members and friends. She loved sports, especially basketball, and was extremely proud that she and her husband, John, had season tickets for 45 years to watch the Fort Hays State University basketball team. For the past 30 years she worked at the family-owned Mille Lacs Golf Resort in Garrison, Minn., where she made everyone feel welcome with her warm smile and quick wit.
A memorial services will be held at the Alliance Church in Garrison, Minn., on Saturday, May 20, 2006, at 1 p.m. followed by a celebration of her life by family and friends at the Blue Goose Inn in Garrison, Minn.
