STAPLES - Three men were charged Thursday in Todd County District Court in connection with an armed robbery Tuesday at Sunset Motel in Staples, Staples Police Chief Kyle Huber said.
The three men charged with first-degree aggravated robbery were Michael Logering, 18, Staples; Brandon A. Schultz, 19, Staples; and a 17-year-old Coon Rapids male, whose name wasn't released.
Huber said Schultz and the Coon Rapids suspect, who had a handgun, knocked on a door at the motel on the west edge of Staples on Highway 10. An Erhard man answered and the suspects forced the man inside the motel room, forced him on the floor and tied him up with items of clothing. The suspects took a credit card, a small amount of cash, a cell phone and other miscellaneous items. They then disabled the telephone in the motel room and left. Huber said Logering was involved with the robbery, but did not go inside the motel room.
Huber said the victim was able to untie himself and call 911 at the motel office. Huber did not release the name or the age of the victim.
The incident occurred at 11:05 p.m.
Huber said officers and a K-9 team from the Todd County Sheriff's Department followed footprints in the snow to track the suspects. Officers detained the suspects within two hours after the incident in south Staples. The suspects are being held in the Todd County Detention Center.
Todd and Wadena County sheriff's departments, State Patrol and the Verndale Police Department assisted the Staples Police Department.
Other charges, in addition to first-degree aggravated robbery, were filed against the three suspects. Logering and Schultz also were charged with the conspiracy to commit first-degree aggravated robbery. Schultz also was charged with second-degree assault. The Coon Rapids suspect was charged with illegal possession of a firearm, second-degree assault, intentional restraint and interfering with a 911 call.
