The Brainerd Warriors girls' hockey team likes to look at things in fours.
After coming off a four-game losing streak, a 2-1-1 streak isn't too bad.
The lone tie came Thursday as the Warriors and Storming Sabres of Sartell/Sauk Rapids skated to a 2-2 overtime finish at Brainerd Area Civic Center.
"I think 2-1-1 is a step in the right direction," said Warriors coach Jim Ernster. "Are we where we want to be? No. The girls know that at the same time it was a good week to get through because you have Christmas Ball and the end of the semester and all that stuff leads to a very distracting week."
Brainerd sophomore Carolyn Sneep got things rolling with a power-play goal in the first period. Junior Emily Lorenz assisted on the play.
Brainerd 2, Sartell 2
Key: Carolyn Sneep and Melissa Hanson registered goals and Val Benjamin stopped 27 shots for the tie
Conference: B 2-3-1, S 4-3-1
Overall: B 4-7-1, S 7-3-3
Next game: Brainerd hosts Detroit Lakes 6:30 p.m.
Junior Melissa Hanson helped Brainerd to a 2-1 advantage when she scored 30 seconds into the third period. Junior Tara Moen assisted on Hanson's goal.
"The key to our team, whether it's shots on goal or power play, we need to have good puck movement from everyone involved," said Ernster. "If we have good puck movement, we don't care who puts the puck in the net as long as somebody gets it done."
But Sartell tied the game at the 11 minute mark when Kelly Meierhofer snapped a stinger from the blue line. Warrior goalie Val Benjamin was screened and the puck sailed in the net.
Benjamin, who finished with 27 saves, preserved the tie when Sabres sophomore forward Rachael Stoebe had an overtime breakaway but fumbled the puck and produced a weak shot.
"Val did a nice job of doing little things like blocking passes from behind the net," said Ernster. "She got out and played the puck and moved the puck up. That's something we've been stressing with all three of our goaltenders is doing the little things."
