Free turkeys or free health care?
I would like to comment on the turkeys for the city employees. I find that that's pretty small peanuts compared to what the school administration gets. They get free health care, plus a fabulous yearly salary that most of us will never ever reach. I think it's time we talk about that. Free health insurance for school administration compared to a turkey and ham for city employees. All of this is coming out of the taxpayers' money. Which would you rather pay -- turkeys and ham or free health insurance for the school administration?
Health insurance premiums for Brainerd School District administrators as well as Brainerd's city administrator, department heads and supervisors are paid by the employer.
Rewarding tax evaders
The Homeland Security Bill passed by the 107th lame duck Congress allows military contracts to be awarded to offshore contractors who can avoid paying tens of millions in taxes by reincorporating offshore. The late Sen. Paul Wellstone had a bill preventing contracts for such tax cheaters. President Bush happily signed the bill allowing these tax exiles and their lobbyists to benefit from the spoils of the Homeland Security Act. Dick Cheney used offshore shelters while running Halliburton and that information is now off limits to the citizens of this country. Obviously, rewarding tax evaders is a part of this administration's policy.
Let them rest in peace
In answer to those who stole the wreath, I know how she feels. I also had a deer and angel stolen from my husband's grave in the Emily cemetery. I hope whoever does these things never knows the heartache he or she has caused the families. My husband was a veteran and fought for these same people. Is this the thanks our veterans get for giving up the best years of their life and even those who gave their life? Tending their grave is all we can do for them now. So please let them rest in peace.
