The yellow ribbons are everywhere -- what do they mean? They seem to imply that there are people in America who do not support our troops. I can't imagine who that would be unless it's our own government which has sent men and women into war ignoring its own generals' advice about the level of force and equipment necessary for success. Has real patriotism been reduced to sticking a flag or a ribbon on one's car? These ribbons will do nothing for the troops who are coming home with shattered bodies and tortured minds and who are, in many cases, being denied needed care and treatment.
From the Boston Globe, 12-13-04, "Amputation rate for U.S. troops twice that of past wars." According to Brown Medical School's Dr. Roy Aaron, the current VA system "literally cannot handle the load" of amputees. Turning off the braying jackasses on talk radio and making an effort to find out what's really behind this damnable war would be a laudable first step in "supporting our troops." As long as the majority still believe, incredibly, that Saddam Hussein and Iraq were behind 9/11, they will go on approving (or ignoring) the war and the country will continue to pay a horrible price in blood and treasure.
Peace activists aren't so peaceful
I've been pondering what it is about self-proclaimed "peace activists" that rubs me the wrong way. I finally realized that what bothers me isn't that these activists want peace (who doesn't?), it's that their verbal assaults on those who disagree with them are anything but peaceful. Indeed, there is a pronounced disconnect between their professed pacifist philosophy and their public behavior, which often borders on belligerence.
Furthermore, there appears to be an astonishing amount of misinformation that circulates amongst the "peacemakers." For example, the letter writer from Merrifield apparently didn't take the time to investigate the shaky methodology behind the Lancet journal article. If she had, she would have realized it is not at all a "fact" that 100,000 Iraqi deaths can be attributed to the war. The 100,000 figure was a very rough estimate. In fact, the researchers indicated that the likely range for Iraqi deaths was anywhere from 8,000 to 194,000. With precision like that, who needs laser-guided missiles?
In addition, peace activists do not appear to be offering any solutions to our current conflict with radical Islam. How do they intend to win over Muslim extremists who hate the U.S. because we defend the right of Israel to exist and because we are a secular nation? I want specifics. Clearly, pulling out of Iraq before the new government can fully defend itself would be counterproductive. However, perhaps someone in the peace movement has a feasible plan for stabilizing the area more quickly. If so, please share.
In closing, I do agree that we should try to love all humanity more. Perhaps we could start by reducing the domestic body count of over 1 million, innocent, unborn children each year through legal (though not particularly safe) abortion.
Board wants to keep county fair free
Holiday greetings from the Crow Wing County Fair Association to all the volunteers and employees who use their talents to make the county fair something we can all be proud of.
The fair board takes pride in managing the resources available to us. Our income from space rental, winter storage, and fair related events is used wisely for building and grounds upkeep, fair entertainment and other fair expenses. The money we receive from your county tax dollars almost covers the insurance costs.
A big project we would like to be completed by next year's fair is a new bathroom and shower facility to replace the old restrooms on the east side of the fairgrounds. We are also trying to budget for a free stage covering and upgrades to the 4-H and youth arts buildings.
We are a nonprofit organization that would gladly accept any tax-deductible contributions anyone would like to send our way. They would definitely be put to good use. They can be sent to Crow Wing County Fair Association 2000 13th St. Brainerd, Minn., 56401. The board is also adamant about keeping the Crow Wing County Fair a "free" fair as long as possible by not charging admission.

No mention of democracy
The news media and all our public officials are bombarding us about the need to promote democracy in one country after another and extolling the benefits of democracy. It's rather interesting though, that nowhere in the federal constitution or in the constitutions of any of the fifty states will you find the word "democracy" even mentioned. In fact, the federal constitution guarantees each state a "republican" form of government. The training manual published in 1935 and used by our armed forces describes democracy as "mob rule, communistic in nature." You will find the word "democracy" in the Federalist Papers written by Jay, Hamilton and Madison, but only to warn people against it. You will also find the word "democracy" in the Communist Manifesto and lo and behold the Communists are advocating it as a neccessary tool in their plan for world conquest.
Can any of you please explain something to me? Are all our news people and our elected officials simply bungling idiots or are they knowingly advocating total control under communism?
