An amazing transformation is continuing to take place at the old county jail. What was once a cell block is being turned into what will ultimately be four levels of attractive and tasteful displays of the county's historical heritage.
30 years ago (1972)
Brainerd city personnel lent a hand in decorating the large Christmas tree on the courthouse lawn. The tree will be part of the scenery for a special community-wide Christmas party. Live animals will be used to depict the scenes of Christ's birth.
40 years ago (1962)
Brainerd received a couple of early Christmas gifts on the economic front this week. Two news items indicate that the economy of the area is doing better than holding its own. Brainerd's bank debit figures for November show a 13 percent increase over November of last year, giving the city one of the best records in the state.
60 years ago (1942)
The membership of the Brainerd Lions Club was dedicated to exert every effort to aid in the rehabilitation and care of returning servicemen during the post-war period.
80 years ago (1922)
The Rotary Club of Brainerd on Thursday evening officiated as hosts at a brilliant banquet at the Ransford Hotel, and the guests were the city teachers, the county nurse and school nurse. President Walter F. Wieland presided at the program following the sumptuous dinner.
100 years ago (1902)
Green: "Brown told an acquaintance of mine that he could have beat my time and married you himself if he had wanted to."
Mrs. Green: "The idea! I wonder why he didn't do it then?"
Green: "Oh, I can readily understand why he didn't. He had a grudge against me."
