Virgil P. Speed, 78, Brainerd, passed away on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at Woodland Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd. He was born in Brainerd on Oct. 22, 1929, to Oliver and Lillian (Miller) Speed. He attended Brainerd High School. He married Ruth Collins in Brainerd on Oct. 30, 1954. Over his lifetime, he worked at Bergman's, S & L, J.C.Penney Co. and Montgomery Ward. He retired from Montgomery Ward as district manager in the Twin Cities in 1988 after 38 years with the company. He moved back to Brainerd in 1996. He was a member of the Heritage Assembly of God Church in Baxter.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth, Brainerd; his son, David (Cybele) Barry, Montana; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Roy, Russell, Earl, Glenn and Merle; and his sisters, Evelyn and Fern.
Services will be held on Saturday, Dec. 15, 2007, at 10 a.m. at Heritage Assembly of God Church in Baxter with Pastor Mark Boone officiating. Friends may call from 9:30 a.m. until the time of the service at the church on Saturday.
Arrangements will be with Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd.
