The Brainerd Warrior dance team took fourth place in high kick and seventh in jazz Saturday at the Eastview High School invitational.
Head Coach Cindy Clough said to place in the top four in high kick at the invitational was amazing because there were a lot of tough teams at the meet.
"Of course you always want to place higher, but we're working on it," said Clough. "We made a lot of improvements from our previous meet and cleaned up some stuff, including our formations. We had a few errors and you can't have them."
Brainerd initially tied for third place with Apple Valley in high kick. The judges used a tiebreaker formula to recalculate the scores and then had to go to a second formula after the two teams tied for the second time.
The high kick results were Eastview first place; Chaska, second; Apple Valley, third; Brainerd, fourth; Wayzata, fifth; Blaine, sixth; Mounds View, seventh; Kennedy, eighth; St. Cloud Tech, ninth; Hopkins, 10th; Anoka, 11th; Champlin Park, 12th; Rochester Century, 13th; Forest Lake, 14th; and Coon Rapids, 15th.
In kick, Brainerd will be dropping its Christmas routine and working on its new Jock Jams mix routine that it will compete in for the remaining part of the season.
In jazz, Clough said the team's goal was to be in the top eight and the team members did that so they were happy. Clough said the team had to change a few things in its jazz routine because of injuries.
Clough was pleased that the team scored a couple of 10s, the highest score possible, in jazz. Clough said the judges so far have liked Brainerd's jazz choreography so she doesn't plan to change it.
"We're just going to keep fine-tuning it and adding more moves," said Clough.
The jazz results were Maple Grove first place; Eastview, second; Mounds View, third; Minnetonka, fourth; Blaine, fifth; Chaska, sixth; Brainerd, seventh; Anoka, eighth; Apple Valley, ninth; Kennedy, 10th; Champlin Park, 11th; Minneapolis Southwest, 12th; Rochester Century, 13th; Forest Lake, 14th; Coon Rapids, 15th; and Minneapolis South, 16th.
The Brainerd junior varsity high kick also competed at the Eastview meet and the results were Eastview, first; Apple Valley, second; Wayzata, third; and Brainerd, fourth.
Brainerd's next invitational will be Jan. 12 in Maple Grove.
