Brainerd School Board members will vote Dec. 19 on making a proposed $2.66 million in cuts to the 2006-07 budget.
That action won't come until after a series of meetings this week to gather feedback from community members.
And the board on Monday listened to the list of cuts presented by Bernie Roberts, board chair, in his Finance Committee report. The proposed cuts include $374,666 at the elementary level; $592,173, middle school; $732,358, secondary; $140,000, administration; $141,084, Area Education Center; and $685,000, miscellaneous items.
The board made no comments during the finance report and no one from the audience commented on the budget cuts during the public forum.
In other school business, the board approved the 2004-05 audit report. As of June 30, 2005, the general fund unreserved balance was $5,266,579.
Accepted resignations from Lynn Hegstad-Toumi, a media specialist at Lowell and Whittier elementary schools, and Cecelia Riedl, a media specialist at Garfield Elementary School, both to be effective Dec. 31.
Set the reorganization meeting at 11:30 a.m. Jan. 3.
Heard from Superintendent Jerry Walseth that it was Roberts' last regular school board meeting. Roberts, who has been on the board for 13 years, did not seek re-election this past November. Walseth thanked Roberts for his leadership and the sense of humor he brought to the school board. Walseth said several hundred dollars was collected in Roberts' name that will be put in the Brainerd Public Schools Foundation fund. After the meeting the district provided cake and coffee in honor of Roberts.
"It has been nothing, but pure pleasure," said Roberts of being on the board.
Roberts will be succeeded by Ruth Nelson, who was sitting in the audience.
