The Pequot Lakes man accused of robbing a Backus bank three weeks ago died Friday in the Cass County Jail of an apparent suicide.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office reported Thomas Van Kleeck was found Friday afternoon hanging in his cell. Attempts to revive Van Kleeck were unsuccessful, the sheriff's office reported. An autopsy is scheduled.
Van Kleeck was accused of robbing $3,100 from the Backus branch of the First National Bank of Walker Nov. 26. On Dec. 1 he was charged in district court with simple robbery and theft, both felonies. He was being held in the jail on $30,000 cash bail or bond.
Thomas Van Kleeck had been on a suicide watch.
In a news release, Sheriff Randy Fisher said Van Kleeck had been on suicide watch since being booked into the jail Dec. 1. Fisher also said Van Kleeck had a psychological evaluation immediately after his arrest and before being booked into the jail.
Further information about the cause and manner of Van Kleeck's death wasn't available from the Cass County Sheriff's Office. A telephone call to Fisher wasn't returned Sunday night.
