Jim Melby passed away suddenly on Dec. 9, 2003, at age 73; his parents preceded him in death. Jim was the beloved husband of Carolyn (Cookie) for 33 years; brother of Lloyd (Jean), twin brother Joe (Elsie), and one sister, Janice Hulderson; the father of Terrence (Karen), Kathie (Roger) Pete, Doug (Gracie); stepchildren, Christopher Kiley, Shannon (Tim) Lindstrom, Thomas Melby; grandchildren Preston Pete, Stephanie Wyatt, Teal Melby, Sarah Lindstrom and Jaedyn Melby, and two great-grandchildren, Avory and Meadow Wyatt. Jim was born Jan. 19, 1930, in Fergus Falls, Minn., and a graduate of Brainerd High School. He joined the Navy during the Korean War and upon his honorable discharge enrolled at the University of Minnesota, graduating with a degree in elementary education. Jim taught the 6th grade at the Robbinsdale School District for 29 years and then retired moving to his lake home in Garrison, Minn. Jim enjoyed golf, University of Minnesota Gopher basketball games, and his annual RV travel to the Colorado River area in Arizona vacationing with his wife, Cookie. Funeral services will be Tuesday, Dec. 16, 10:30 a.m. at the Light of the Cross Lutheran Church in Garrison, Minn. Burial will take place at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery. A celebration and visitation of Jim's life will be held Monday, Dec. 15, from 5-8 p.m. at the Halvorson-Johnson Funeral Home in Brainerd, Minn., and one hour before the funeral service on Tuesday, Dec. 16, from 9:30-10:30 a.m.
