Heartland Animal Rescue Team tried but failed to obtain financial backing from the Crow Wing County Board. Three-year-old HART was trying to secure the $4,000 in funding given to the Lakes Area Humane Society, but the board funded LAHS.

(Photo) Jerry Thorne, advertising manager of the Brainerd Dispatch, was named to the board of the Brainerd Chamber of Commerce, replacing Sy Foss, vice president of Citizens State Bank, who is leaving to become president of a bank at Washburn.

The new state fisheries building in west Brainerd was recently completed at a cost of $36,000 and will be turned over to the Minnesota Game and Fish Department. It will house a hatchery, offices, research lab and will employ 11 people.

Half-crazed by his 45 hours of imprisonment among earth and stone, Gus Snyder, Crosby miner, who was trapped in a drift cave-in at the Croft mine on the 388 foot level Tuesday afternoon, was rescued at 11:40 a.m. today. He is recovering in the hospital today.
100 years ago (1909)
Frank Petrie and Ole Olson were sworn in as special police without pay to serve as watchmen in the Northern Pacific yards during the switchmen's strike, which continues. Like the other special police in the yards they are being paid by the company.
