CROSBY - Veronica "Fronie" Filla Nelson, 92, of Crosby, died Dec. 10, 2005, at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby.
Fronie and her twin Victoria were born Dec. 19, 1912, on the family farm in Laporte, Minn., to Paul and Julianna Filla. She was the ninth of thirteen children.
She attended school in Laporte, riding ten miles in a horse-drawn school bus driven by her father. Fronie met her husband John Nelson in 1930 and they were married in Two Harbors, Minn., on Feb. 1, 1931. During their early years of marriage they lived in many towns throughout Minnesota, including Canyon, Sleepy Eye and then settled in the Crosby area in the later 1930s. In 1962 Fronie began working for St. Joseph's Catholic School as a cook. Over the years Fronie was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Deerwood and Crosby and an active member of the Foresters and the Alter Society.
Survivors include sons Robert "Bob" (Janet) Nelson of Crosby, Merlin "Kip" Nelson of Crosby, Dr. Gerald "Jerry" Nelson of Solana Beach, Calif., James "Jim" Nelson of Crosby, Wayne (Mary Ann) Nelson of Buffalo, Bruce "Bud" Nelson of Deerwood and Douglas "Dick" (Marilyn) Nelson of Minnetonka; daughters Veronica "Tutie" Schemmel of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Scena "Tena" (Ronald) Proodian, Acton, Mass.; brother Roman (Lois) Filla of Little Fork; sister Katherine Swanberg of Cass Lake; sister-in-law Loretta Filla of Ironton; 29 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents; husband John; seven brothers, John, Albert, Christ, Aloyze, Joseph, Teofil and Andrew Filla; three sisters, twin Victoria Filla, Julia Travers and Anna Filla; two grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and son-in-law Louis Schemmel.
Funeral Services will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Crosby. Burial will be at the Lakewood Cemetery in Crosby. Friends may call on Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Koop Funeral Home in Crosby with a rosary at 7 p.m.
