The 68-year-old Federal Dam man who was seriously injured in a two-vehicle accident Thursday worked as a Cass County district judge.
Michael Haas, who retired from the bench in Cass County in 2002, was listed in serious condition Saturday at Hennepin County Medical Center.
Haas was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his wife, Kay Haas, 55, Federal Dam. Kay Haas suffered a broken ankle and was transported to St. Mary's Regional Health Center in Detroit Lakes. Michael Haas initially was transported to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd and then was transferred to HCMC.
The accident occurred at 8:42 a.m. on Highway 200 at Onigum Road, east of Walker, the State Patrol reported. Frederick Ebert, 33, Remer, the other driver, was westbound when he lost control of his vehicle on the icy roadway and collided head-on with the Haas vehicle. Ebert was treated at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids and released.
Judge David F. Harrington, a Cass County District Court judge, said Haas retired from the bench in Cass County, but he still works in different court systems where a judge is needed. Haas at the time of the accident was on his way to court in Park Rapids for a case.
The State Patrol responded to a few accidents Thursday elsewhere in the Brainerd lakes area because of the snowstorm that created slippery roads. The storm caused a few minor fender benders in Brainerd, Baxter, Little Falls, Pequot Lakes and Cass County.
The State Patrol responded to a fatal accident at 5:48 p.m. on Highway 65 in Aitkin County. A California woman died at the scene.
The State Patrol was called to a one-vehicle accident at 6:53 p.m. on Highway 84, south of Longville. The driver, Robert Depaoli, 20, Baxter, was treated at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd and later released.
The last accident Thursday was a one-vehicle rollover at 11:30 p.m. on Highway 10, near Lincoln. James Falk, 52, Fargo, N.D., was taken to the Greater Staples Hospital for minor injuries. Falk was in stable condition Friday.
