Winter YMCA swim lessons

The Brainerd Family YMCA next swim lesson schedule is available at the YMCA and on the Web at brainerdlakesymca.org.

The session begins the week of Jan. 5 and meets once a week for six weeks. These pre-school and school-age lessons are taught by trained, energetic instructors. YMCA members can begin registering for pre-school classes Monday and school-age classes Tuesday. Community members can begin on Dec. 18. Contact the Brainerd Family YMCA at 829-4767 or stop by at 602 Oak St. in Brainerd to register.

College receives grant from Hallett Trust Foundation

The Central Lakes College Foundation has been awarded a grant of $2,000 from the E.W. Hallett Trust Foundation, Crosby.

The grant application was submitted to assist Central Lakes College students with unforeseen emergency expenses through the Random Acts of Kindness Fund. The RAK Fund was developed in 2005 and has assisted more than 175 students. Assistance amounts vary from $150-$250 per student, per school year.

The Random Acts of Kindness program exists to enable CLC students with financial emergencies to attend all classes and reach their higher education goals. The Hallett Foundation grant will allow the CLC Foundation to replenish this fund for future use.

Donations are being accepted for this emergency fund for any amount. Checks should be made out to the Central Lakes College Foundation, 501 West College Drive, Brainerd, MN 56401.

Donation account established for fire victims

Crow Wing Power Credit Union has established an account to accept donations on behalf of Adam Herron and KatieRae Engman who lost their home on Dec. 5 as a result of a fire.

Donations can be mailed to Crow Wing Power Credit Union, P.O. Box 962, Brainerd, MN 56401.

FBI special agent to address national security at college forum

FBI Special Agent Paul A. McCabe will address national security at noon Dec. 18 during the Rosenmeier Forum in the Dryden Theatre on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College.

McCabe, who is currently the supervisor of FBI operations in greater Minnesota, has more than 22 years of experience with the agency. He is based in the Minneapolis regional office.

McCabe has worked as a street agent, independent counsel investigator, undercover agent and a supervisory special agent. He has supervised a cyber crimes squad, counter-intelligence squad and a joint terrorism task force squad. In addition, he has been a spokesman for the Minneapolis division of the FBI from 1999 to 2008, serving most recently as media relations director.

The Rosenmeier Center was formed in 1989 in recognition of Sen. Gordon Rosenmeier's 30-year contribution as a Minnesota state legislator from Little Falls. Tax-free donations to fund programming, research and scholarship for the Rosenmeier Center can be made through the Central Lakes College Foundation.
