Crosslake has a vacancy to fill on its city council.
Crosslake Council member Irene Schultz, who served a total of six years on the council, submitted a letter of resignation Monday.
"As you are all aware, I have been facing a number of health challenges over the past year that has kept me away from my duties as a council member," Schultz wrote. "This has not been easy for me as I truly love this community and looked forward to returning to serve Crosslake on the city council."
Schultz suffered a stroke in January. After spending time in a nursing home and then assisted living facility close to her family in the Twin Cities, Schultz was able to return and attended regular council meetings during the summer. But she was recently hospitalized again after a fall. In her letter, Schultz said it has become apparent her recovery will take longer than she hoped for.
"I fear my prolonged absence is hindering the important work you have to do and I would never want to do anything that would harm this community in any way," Schultz said. "Therefore, it is with great regret that effective immediately I will be resigning my position as a member of the Crosslake City Council. I want to thank all of you for support and patience over the past year. It has been an honor to work with you and to represent the residents of Crosslake."
Schultz also thanked city staff members.
"Their kindness and concern as I fight through these difficult times has meant the world to me," she said. "Finally, for the record, I would like to thank the residents of Crosslake for giving me the opportunity to serve them. I am so proud to be able to call Crosslake my home, and so many of you my friends."
Darlene Roach, Crosslake city clerk/treasurer, said the council directed the personnel committee to take letters of interest and interview candidates. The committee is expected to make finalist recommendations to the council, which will decide on a candidate to fill the remainder of the term that expires Dec. 31, 2010. Roach said the council did not specify a time frame, but will probably start interviews in January.
Schultz served on the council between 2001 and 2004. The city reported Schultz was appointed to fill the balance of Donna Keiffers' term before being elected to the council. She had an unsuccessful campaign for mayor in November of 2004 before being elected as a council member in 2006.
Schultz is known for her collection of hats and always wore one to the council meetings. In her letter, Schultz said she looks forward to returning to Crosslake in the near future, sporting her newest hat.
