I'm all for neighborhood elementary schools, but why do we need to pay a principal $90,000 to operate a school of 120 pupils? We need to look at changing the balance of administration. We have elementary schools with 500-600 students and one principal while there are schools with 100-250 pupils with one principal. What is wrong with that picture?
There are about 117 kindergarten through fourth-grade students at Whittier Elementary School in north Brainerd, making it the smallest of the district's eight elementary schools. Whittier Principal Pat Altrichter wears many hats. In addition to serving as Whittier principal, Altrichter is also the district curriculum coordinator. Next year one of the proposed budget reductions calls for Altrichter to take over the .2 district music coordinator position as well, in addition to her other duties. Another budget reduction proposed by school administrators is the elimination of 1.5 administrators, likely by attrition and the redistribution of administrative duties, a $115,000 reduction.
Tell Cindy 'thanks'
Tell Cindy Clough "thank you" today. There were no veteran Kixters purposely omitted from the Just For Kix show. In an e-mail sent to me, Coach Clough wrote, "Important: Forward this to as many Kixter alumni as you know. Seek out addresses. We need your help!" It was basically a word-of-mouth effort to contact as many alumni as possible. Wake up, Brainerd! Cindy Clough puts so much time and effort into organizing these shows to benefit the Kixters. All proceeds from the show are donated to the Kixters. What a great fund-raiser.
Clough as role model
Cindy Clough is exactly the person I would want as a role model for myself and my two daughters. Also, who better to coordinate a reunion than the person who brought us together in the first place? I find it hard to believe that Cindy would intentionally leave someone out of the show. All Kixter alumni are welcome to participate. If you were not notified this time, speak up and get your name and number to someone. Cindy has given each of us something special that will be a part of our lives forever and should be commended, not criticized.
Parking lots and shopping
One of the most difficult aspects of Christmas shopping for senior citizens is dealing with parking lots. If area retailers would follow Wal-Mart's lead by using angled parking spaces, entering and leaving the lots would be much easier.
We women enjoy a good recipe. I recently purchased a cookbook from the Lake Region Christian School and I would recommend it to those of you looking for a nice gift at Christmas time. This was one of those few cookbooks that had ingredients I actually had in my home and didn't have to run to the store for. The students and their parents collected these recipes and worked hard to put together a wonderful collection of tried-and-true recipes that all can enjoy and prepare. Thank you, Lake Region Christian School, for putting together this awesome cookbook.
Frustrated by Vox Pop
I'm a concerned citizen who reads your paper. I'm frustrated by Vox Pop. I think people should sign their name just like any letter to the editor. I think it's just a free-for-all for people to run other people down. If people are concerned, they should be putting their name down. Otherwise it's not worth writing. If there are concerns, no one has any way to go back to that person and give them correct information.
Serving students, staff, community
Scott Kile's report about the condition of the Crosby-Ironton school system is very much in alignment with modern politics. Once you are voted in, just disregard your duty and do what you want to do. Ideally, a school board member should serve the students, staff and the community.
Thanks for the celebration
I'd like to thank the city of Brainerd and the Parks and Recreation Department for putting on another holiday celebration at Gregory Park. It was very nice. The weather was cold, but the day, when dressed appropriately, could make many memories. I appreciate the city and the parks and rec for doing it.
Vox Pop intimidates people
I wish you could do away with Vox Pop. Unless people sign their names, they should write to Open Forum. I feel it's used to intimidate certain individuals. For instance, the C-I superintendent issue. It just stirs up old resentment since the strike. If the teachers want to complain, let them find jobs elsewhere. Where else can you be critical about your boss and still be employed? I think our superintendent is doing a great job for our community and we're lucky to have her. We're not so lucky having the naivete in this column, however.
Increase school day by half hour
In regards to the extended school year, it doesn't work in a resort area or farming area. Why not increase the school day by one-half hour because we're already here? That way there isn't additional maintenance cost to run the district.
Don't lump holidays together
I don't agree with the person who wrote in about "happy holidays." It makes the whole year of certain events meaningless. For a lot of citizens, it might be easier, but who wants easy? There's a lot of significance in each and every holiday, not only Christian, but war veterans and the founding of America. Let's not lump them together but remember why we celebrate each one in the first place.
