LITTLE FALLS -- Joseph Bachan, 71, Little Falls, died Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at home.
He was born Feb. 21, 1931, in Gary, Ind., to Nikola and Mary (Kanopka) Bacan. He married Phyllis Dorothy Salee on Jan. 31, 1953, in Shawneetow, Ill. He was a 20-year veteran of the Army from 1948 to 1968 obtaining the rank of master sergeant at age 21. He was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor during the Korean War. He did tours of duty at Fort Knox, Ky.; Germany; Korea; Camp Breckenridge, Ky.; Indian Town Gap, Pa.; Camp Tortuguera; Fort Buchanan; San Cristobol in Puerto Rico; Panama; Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.; and Camp Ripley. After retirement from the Army, he worked as an auditor for American National Bank in Little Falls, retiring in 1986. He also worked at Coborn's Grocery in Little Falls for a few years during his retirement. He was a member of the Little Falls VFW.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Dorothy Bachan, Little Falls, Jean Erickson, Little Falls, and Jane Bachan-Anderson, Randall; two sons, Joseph Bachan II, Hopkins, and Ronald Bachan, Little Falls; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nine brothers, Milan Bacan, Griffith, Ind., Michael Bacan, East Chicago, Ind., Paul Bachan, Munster, Ind., John Bachan, Cedar Lake, Ind., Nick Bachan, Calumet City, Ill., Daniel Bachan, Richmond, Texas, Robert Bachan, Junction City, Kan., Richard Bacan, Post Falls, Idaho, and Steven Mihailovich, East Chicago, Ind.; and three sisters, Mary Ann Cooper, East Chicago, Ind., Kathleen Knieriemen, DeMotte, Ind., and Josephine Haluska, Highland, Ind.
His parents; his stepfather, Sino "Sam" Mihajlovic; a sister, Barbara Thweat; and a grandchild died earlier.
Services will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at the Shelley Funeral Chapel in Little Falls.
Friends may call from 5-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral chapel. Burial will be at a later time. Memorials are preferred to the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery.
