Dorothy Schlegel, 87, Onamia, formerly of Brainerd, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at Mille Lacs Hospital in Onamia with the Rev. Paul Fruth officiating.
She was born May 28, 1914, in Lastrup to Peter and Teresa (Smith) Tretter. She attended country school in Lastrup. She married Albert Schlegel on Sept. 24, 1929. They farmed in the Lastrup area until 1946, when they moved to the Staples area. In 1952, they moved to the Pine Center area and then moved to Brainerd in 1965. She worked as a homemaker and as a nurse's aide at a nursing home. Her husband died in 1980. She lived with her son since May 2001. She was a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church on Brainerd and belonged to St. Christopher's Guild.
Survivors include five daughters, Mary Ann Virnig, Virginia Gross, Lorraine Virnig and Kathleen Bednarek, all of Hillman, and Patricia Miers, Shaumburg, Ill.; five sons, Christian Schlegel, Minneapolis, Walter Schlegel, Brainerd, Kenneth Schlegel, Brainerd, Raymond Schlegel, Roseville, and Robert Schlegel, Pierz; 59 grandchildren; 129 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lorraine Gould, St. Paul, and Lorretta Schommer, Clearwater, Fla.; two half-sisters, Frances Hoheisel, Pierz, and Rose Mary Arvidson, Anoka; and two half-brothers, Joe Tretter, Coon Rapids, and Donny Tretter, Elk River.
Her husbands, six brothers, John, Nick, Fred, Felix, Raymond and Wally, and four sisters, Josephine, Anna, Helen and Agnes, died earlier.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Brainerd. Burial will be in Lastrup.
Friends may call from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday at Brenny Funeral Chapel in Baxter with parish prayers at 5 p.m., and an hour before services Wednesday at the church.
